FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Everything about creating, arranging, sharing, and upgrading Mermaid diagrams in SayDiagram.
What is SayDiagram?
SayDiagram turns plain language or a diagram photo into editable Mermaid, lets you arrange the layout on a visual canvas (source stays in sync), then paste into Figma, FigJam, Penpot, Excalidraw, Canva, and other design tools — or share and embed. Free, Pro, and Team plans.
How is this different from a Mermaid code editor?
Code-only editors stop at syntax. SayDiagram adds image scan (whiteboard or sketch → Mermaid, with cleanup and multi-image upload), Arrange mode so you drag nodes while source stays editable, and one-copy paste into Figma, FigJam, Penpot, Excalidraw, and Canva. You can still edit the Mermaid source anytime.
Do I need to know Mermaid syntax?
No. You can describe a process in plain language, scan a sketch or whiteboard photo, start from a template at /templates (each template has its own page, e.g. /templates/flowchart), or drag shapes in Arrange mode. Prefer learning the syntax? Free lessons at /learn include cheatsheets, live previews, and quizzes. You can still edit the Mermaid source whenever you want.
Which diagram types are supported?
Flowchart, sequence, ER, state, class, mindmap, timeline, requirement, pie, Gantt, git graph, C4, and Sankey diagrams — plus themes, fonts, and layout tools that work across arrangeable types. Present reveals flowchart nodes, pie slices, Gantt tasks, git commits, and Sankey flows step-by-step (C4 stays a full slide). Timeline, pie, Gantt, git graph, C4, and Sankey stay Preview-only (no Arrange).
What’s included on the free plan?
Unlimited private diagrams, share links and embeds (up to 3 public or unlisted), SVG export, favorites, trash, and .mmd import. Free includes daily AI caps (3 ideas, 1 image scan, 3 layout polishes), 5 Arrange sessions and 5 PNG/PDF exports per day (watermarked), plus 3 folders and version history (last 5 + 3 pins). Daily AI allowances apply on all plans; extreme automated usage may be rate-limited.
How does Pro differ from Free?
Pro adds unlimited folders, sharing, Arrange, and watermark-free PNG/PDF export, plus generous AI allowances (100 ideas, 20 scans, 50 layouts per day), longer version history, custom branding on share and embed pages (and hide Present’s “Powered by SayDiagram” via Profile), GitHub sync (gist/repo push-pull and App Auto-sync), Public API keys, and priority support. Pro is $12/month or $10/month billed yearly — built for people who live in scan → Arrange → Figma paste, with docs in git when you need them.
Can students get Pro for free?
Yes. Sign up with a .edu email and you get Pro free for one year automatically — no coupon required.
What is the Team plan?
Team includes Pro-tier usage for everyone on the workspace. The owner invites up to 5 editors and unlimited viewers, shares a team library with folders, async comments with @mentions, in-app notifications, email for invites and mentions, realtime co-edit on Team diagrams, org share lock, domain auto-join, collaborator links (comment/edit without burning a seat), and PDF export. Admins can change member roles after join. Team is $29/month or $24/month billed yearly.
How do team invites work?
The Team owner (or an Admin) invites a teammate by email from Profile → Team. Choose Member, Admin, or Viewer — and change roles later without re-inviting. We email the invite and always show a copyable accept link (valid 14 days). The invitee signs in with that email and accepts. Members inherit Pro quotas while the Team subscription is active; Viewers can view and comment but not edit. For people outside the workspace, create a collaborator link from Diagram access (comment or edit) — that grants DiagramShare access without using an editor seat.
Can I share or embed diagrams?
Yes. Create share links (public or unlisted) and embed codes from the editor. Free allows up to 3 shared diagrams; Pro and Team include unlimited sharing, with optional custom branding on Pro and Team. See /doc/embed for Notion iframe paste and oEmbed.
Can I learn Mermaid and get a certificate?
Yes. Every /learn lesson has a free quiz (guests included). Sign in to save your best score. Score 80% or higher to certify that lesson; finish all lessons to unlock a printable Mermaid learning path certificate.
Is there an IDE extension?
Yes — install SayDiagram from the VS Code Marketplace (also works in Cursor, Windsurf, and VSCodium via Open VSX). Preview .mmd files, open them in SayDiagram, or generate with AI. Pro/Team users can set an API key for in-IDE AI generation. Search “SayDiagram” in Extensions.
Can I use diagrams in Figma?
Yes. Copy SVG or PNG from the editor and paste into Figma (including FigJam boards), or install the SayDiagram plugin for Figma and FigJam from Figma Community: https://www.figma.com/community/plugin/1660710662902212113. In the editor, Export → Send to plugin creates a one-time MS_HANDOFF code. Inserted layers store Mermaid source so you can Copy Mermaid from selection in the plugin. The same SVG/PNG copies also paste into Penpot, Excalidraw, and Canva.
Is there a public API?
Yes on Pro and Team. Create API keys in Profile, then call /api/v1/diagrams/from-idea or /api/v1/diagrams/from-image with Authorization: Bearer sd_live_…. Same daily idea and scan quotas as the web app. Docs: /doc/public-api. For AI agents: /llms.txt, /openapi.json, and /doc/agents.
Can I sync diagrams with GitHub?
Yes on Pro and Team. Install the GitHub App for repo Auto-sync, and/or connect OAuth for gists. Use Export → Sync with GitHub… to link a file, push/pull, or enable Auto-sync. Docs: /doc/github-sync.
Is there a desktop app?
Desktop apps for Mac and Windows are coming soon — same Arrange, themes, and polish tools, available offline. Join the waitlist on the home page to get notified.
